Compressed air adsorption dryers

Compressed air adsorption dryers

Adsorption dryers are industrial devices that effectively remove moisture from the air even at low temperatures. The drying process is carried out by two independent air streams flowing through the device – process and regenerative.

Industrial adsorption dehumidifiers are durable devices that guarantee the highest efficiency of air dehumidification. Despite this, they are not recommended for home use due to the lack of a built-in water tank.

Compressed air adsorption dryers – principle of operation

Adsorption dryers are made of two columns. While the former dries the compressed air flowing through it, the latter is dried (regenerated). Working alternately, they remove moisture from the air to a preset level and maintain it without user intervention.

These devices effectively dehumidify the air using the adsorption process. They accumulate adsorbate – in this case moisture molecules – on the surface of the adsorbent, i.e. a solid. Two air streams slowly rotate the rotor, creating a continuous dehumidification process.

The stream of incoming moist air taken by the dehumidifier goes to the process air filter in the device, which is designed to trap contaminants. Moisture is then absorbed and condensed after passing through a slowly rotating rotor coated with a hygroscopic substance that attracts passing water molecules. For this purpose, the most commonly used substances are silica gel or sodium chloride.

The airflow is then split into process and reclaim air. The first is dry, cleaned and heated air that goes outside the dehumidifier, thanks to the process fan. The second is to regenerate the rotor. It goes to the regeneration filter, and then it is heated to reduce its relative humidity, thanks to the heating elements. The heat flowing through the rotor evaporates the moisture accumulated on it. Then it goes to the tank of the device or is discharged outside the room through the regeneration air outlet thanks to the fan.

Adsorption dryer and condensation dryer – comparison

Adsorption dryers maintain a predetermined capacity regardless of operating conditions. Compared to condensation dehumidifiers, they have a wider range of applications in terms of humidity and ambient temperature at the start of the dehumidification process. These devices can dehumidify air at temperatures as low as 0°C. The cleaned and dried air is heated to a higher temperature than their condensing counterparts, thanks to which the working time can be shortened. A much lower noise level is another undoubted advantage of these devices.

For industrial applications or rooms with low temperature, we strongly recommend adsorption dryers. Choose between -40°C and -70°C pressure dew point (PDP), cold regenerated high pressure units with working pressures up to 500 bar, and hot regenerated units to minimize compressed air loss. Hot regeneration without loss gives us 0% loss of compressed air. On the other hand, heat regenerated dehumidifiers have a loss of about 2%. In the case of cold regenerated, we have to take into account a loss of about 15%.

Our offer includes adsorption dehumidifiers from KSI Filtertechnik, Omega Air, Jorc and FRIULAIR.
